What is XML?

Extensible Markup Language (XML) is the universal format for data on the Web. While both HTML and XML use “Tags”, HTML tags are used to layout a web page while XML actually provides detailed information about the data items it is tagging. XML has allowed us to tag and deliver rich, structured data from any EDGAR filing. It is easy to understand, read and author. Since XML has no ties to one particular operating system it was the perfect conduit to use for EDGAR Explorer.

Benefits to programmers and web site users include:
  • Development of flexible Web applications
  • More meaningful searches
  • Multiple views on the data
  • Format for Web delivery
  • Reconfigure data without having to re-access the server
These are just some of the reasons XML allows developers to build more individualized, dynamic sites and pages.
